With a 16-strikeout performance from pitcher Bailey Jacobs, a slew of timely hits and a little help from their opponent, the Carver Middle School softball team earned a rivalry game victory and the bragging rights that go along with it by defeating Spring Hill Middle School 7-4 Wednesday afternoon.

It was Spring Hill who looked the better team early, as they raced out to a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. The Spartans had nearly batted around twice before the Eagles' eighth hitter stepped into the batter's box for the first time in the third inning. While that batter struck out, the next started what would be a five run Carver rally. Wild pitches, errors and a single by Carver's Libby Ingram (1-for-3, run) doomed Spring Hill in the third, putting them at a disadvantage from which they would not recover.

Spring Hill pitcher Avery Callahan (7 strikeouts) held the Eagles in check for stretches, but in the end was hurt by sloppy play in the field behind her and a lack of control on her part.

Jacobs also struggled with control at times, issuing two walks in the fifth before settling in and striking out the next three batters.

Offensively for the Eagles Grace McCormick (1-for-3, run), Jonissa Monley (1-for-2) and Destiny Morrisey (1-for-2) reached base.

Brianna Harris (1-for-2, double), Callahan (2-for-4, double), and Deondra Spring (2-for-3, double, stolen base) were the hitters for the Spartans, who struggled to reach base all afternoon on the overpowering Jacobs.

"We had two good pitchers going head to head, and we made two errors in the first inning which cost us some runs," said Carver head coach Scott Jacobs of his team's early struggles.

"Our pitcher really brought us through, and gave us momentum," Jacobs added.

For the past two seasons the Spartans finished at the top of their conference, leading Jacobs to look at Wednesday's victory as an important result, "putting Carver right back in" contention for a conference title.

With the win Carver advances to 2-1 on the season, while Spring Hill falls to 2-2.
