The Scotland High School junior-varsity baseball team used three pitchers to shut down Seventy-First, and the Scots got at least one hit from all but one spot in the lineup during a 15-1 Mid-Southeastern 4-A Conference victory over Seventy-First on Tuesday at McCoy Field in Laurinburg.

The jayvee Scots climb to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the M-SEC. Alex Fricke started and got the win; Fricke struck out four and yielded just one hit in three shutout innings.

Trevor Shampy worked the fourth, striking out two batters and walking one Falcon. The Scots led 15-0 going into the top of the fifth. There, Josh Collins would allow one unearned run on two hits while striking out a pair.

"I thought that Alex Fricke did a good job, going up there and throwing strikes," said SHS head coach Michael Sellers. "Trevor Shampy has been a big plus this year, giving us a left-handed pitcher ... Josh Collins continues to throw well and throw the ball extremely hard.

"Our pitching is our mainstay. They talk about our record, but it's based upon our pitchers going up there, throwing strikes and getting outs."

The offense was also there, as the Scots reached a double-figure run total for the seventh time in nine games played. Ten of the team's 16 hits came from three players, including Daniel Walters, who was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs driven in.

Fricke went 3-for-4, doubled, walked and drove in four runs. Alex Peele was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Catcher Matt Radford went 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and two RBIs. Jay Coleman was 2-for-3, Kyle Clark and Will Gover had one hit and one RBI apiece, and Tim Chavis also had a hit for Scotland.

"We have a very good hitting lineup. We hit from top to bottom," said Sellers. "When everybody in your lineup can hit, and everyone in your lineup can run, you can do things offensively.

"We're clicking right now, and it's because we're working hard."

Fallen Scot

Scotland will have to play the rest of this season without freshman standout Derek Barnes. Barnes sustained a serious injury when he collided with Purnell Swett's first baseman at the first-base bag on Monday, breaking his jaw in two places and suffering a deep cut inside his mouth.

Barnes went to Chapel Hill, and is expected to have his jaw wired shut to fix the two separations, one in the middle of his chin, and one on the side of the jawbone.

Barnes was Scotland's starting centerfielder, the team's fastest player and one of its top hitters (Sellers guessed Barnes' average to be over .600). The Scots lost another outfielder, Cody Marcure, when Marcure was called up to the varsity team, making his first start in left field on Monday at Purnell Swett.

"One of the reasons why we play a lot of people on the jayvee level is because, if you give a kid a uniform, they need to play," said Sellers.

"Kyle Clark stepped up after we lost Cody Marcure to the varsity, and then today, Jacob Davison stepped up. That's what it is—when somebody goes down, the next person in line steps up.

"We're going to have to move and shake and move some things around. It's all about the team; it's not about you, the individual."

Scotland hosts Richmond on Friday at 5 p.m.
