Smoke hung over Gum Swamp Tuesday afternoon as a fire raged deep in the swamp near Laurel Hill.

The fire, which was just south of McFarland Road near the intersection of Bunch Road, is being handled by the North Carolina Forestry Services.

A representative at the third district forestry headquarters out of Rockingham said a helicopter was called in because the forester service could not get their bulldozers to the fire because of swampy and heavily wooded terrain.

"If it comes out of the swamp, there are some houses that would be threatened," the representative said, though he noted the risk was low.

He said that calls for rain and high humidity would control the fire in coming days if the service could not extinguish it today.

The official also said that the service had not yet determined the cause of the blaze, noting that "they are more concerned with stopping the fire" than finding its cause at present.

He said the helicopter was based out of Lumberton.

The acreage affected is unknown at this time.

The official said more information would be available today.

Gibson and Laurel Hill fire departments are assisting with the fire.
