There is little truth to the rumor that there have been a rash of rapes or sexual assaults in Laurel Hill, Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones said Wednesday.

Jones said his office has been inundated with calls on the subject. In addition, Jones said a number of media outlets and other law enforcement agencies have received calls inquiring whether the Scotland sheriff's department has put together a task force to capture the assailant.

"There is not a serial rapist in Laurel Hill, and if anything like that were to happen the public would definitely be notified," Jones said.

Jones speculated that the rumors started because there have been three reports involving sex crimes.

Jones said one dealt with a prostitution arrest.

A separate assault case has been deemed questionable by officials, Jones said.

He said in yet another case, someone was charged with rape.
