The deadline for those interested in the vacant school board seat held by the late James Underwood is Dec. 10.

Anyone wishing to fill the unexpired term of Underwood, who died last month, should submit a résumé and cover letter to Nancy Smith, administrative assistant to the board at the A.B. Gibson Education Center. She can be reached at 322 South Main Street, Laurinburg, NC 28352.

The seat is one of the Scotland County Board of Education’s at-large positions. To be eligible, an applicant cannot live in the Stewartsville Township.

For questions about eligibility, interested applicants should contact the Scotland County Board of Elections.

“The board will accept applications at least until its Dec. 10 meeting,” school spokesman Andy Cagle said in statement.

Cagle said a decision will be made on the application timeline at the December meeting.

Per Scotland County Board of Education policy, the remaining members of the board will select a replacement to fill an unexpired term of office. The board expects to interview for the seat in January.

Board members said they wanted to postpone filling the vacant seat until after new school board members have been seated.

Underwood, a clergyman and educator, died on Oct. 4, 2012. He was 46.

Underwood was elected to the Board of Education in 2010. His term on the Board of Education expires in 2014.
