Though their season ended in disappointing fashion, the varsity soccer Fighting Scots as a whole defined the word ‘selfless’ all season long. Between the occasional injury and changes to starting lineups, Scotland’s soccer players demonstrated that they were willing to do whatever it took to earn a victory, including playing various positions when their number was called to do so.

This past week, two of the Fighting Scots were rewarded for their stellar play. Scotland senior Carter Dold and junior Victor Still were selected to both the All-Conference and All-Region teams, and in coach Colin McDavid’s view, it was each athlete’s commitment to being team players that truly defined their success in 2012.

“They are both very unselfish players and their recognition is well-deserved,” McDavid said. “Both were called on to play different roles for us this season and they were excellent no matter where they were on the field.”

In his final season with the Fighting Scots, Dold was often tasked with playing defense and earned raves from his coaching staff throughout the season. But even in a diminished offensive role, Dold nonetheless tallied four goals to be amongst the team-leaders in the statistical category.

“Carter was primarily a defender this year, but the fact that he still provided goals for us shows you what type of player he is,” McDavid said. “He was always willing to play wherever we needed him, and he’ll be missed next season.”

Utilizing his blazing quickness and ability to break away from opposing team’s defenders, Still notched two goals for the Scots this year and was often a catalyst for Scotland’s successful offensive production.

But when starting goalkeeper Robert McMillian went down with an injury in the latter half of the season against Pinecrest on the road, Still was asked to take on his teammate’s responsibilities.

“He was one of, if not the most threatening offensive player on our team when we made that change,” said McDavid of Still. “We had to use him in-goal for the last few games of the season, and he was great. Even though he only had two goals, Victor was an extremely productive player for us and it’s nice to know he’ll back for one last run with us.”

The Fighting Scots ended their 2012 season with a 3-13-1 record.
