Near my Woodrun subdivision there is a 2’ x 4’ sign, mounted on 6’ posts listing complaints against the county commission, school board, services, a “collapsing” industrial base, taxes, etc. The owner seems to revel in playing the game: “Ain’t It Awful?”.
But I am weary of seeing that sign, which has been up for quite some time, and am ashamed for not protesting about it long ago.
Scotland County and its communities need encouragement and positive ideas in support of leaders and those who would seek to help in these hard times. Sure, we have big problems, but if we employ that support with commitment and energy we all win.
So I am asking the owner of the sign to promptly remove it. It is a “black eye” for the neighborhood, and if the sign does not disappear shortly, we neighbors should put pressure on the owner.
Similar signs or complaints not accompanied by positive ideas should also disappear, to be replaced with support for the many wonderful things in our county: a great host of volunteer agencies, concerned citizens working quietly, churches addressing human need, a fine hospital, parks and recreation, storytelling, etc.
Folks working for the good are the real, legitimate “signs” of the times.
