A number of events will be competing to send a shiver up the spines of locals this Halloween, including a haunted maze known as “Shady Acres” on Academy Road in Laurinburg.
Organized by “Blackout Productions,” the themed maze began terrorizing visitors last week and continues on Saturday at 7 p.m. The event runs through Oct. 30.
The background story behind the “Shady Acres” theme includes the tale of a demented doctor known as Jedidiah Thomas.
According to Blackout Productions promotional materials, Thomas was responsible for experimenting on patients in “unapproved” ways until being shut down by the government.
“When authorities went to relocate the patients, they had all vanished,” reads the background story. Thomas was later released from his prison cell by a mysterious figure and has not been seen since.
“After years of investigation, we have found the whereabouts of Dr. Thomas and the infamous Shady Acres. We need your help to further our investigation,” say event organizers.
While declining to be identified, the director of Blackout Productions said that all of the scares will be for a good cause.
“The idea is to give kids and their families something to do and two help … Scotland County Community Services for their food drive and Relay for Life.”
The director expects the event to take place again in 2013.
“It is something that we had been thinking about doing, and we finally just pulled it together. Next year we will probably do it in a different location.”
Among the scarier costumes is the “Key Master,” he said.
Admission will be $5 for kids 10 years of age and under and $10 for adults. A $2 discount will be granted to those bringing at least 4 non-perishable food items to benefit Scotland County Community Services “Feed the Hungry” program. A portion of all proceeds will also go to support Relay for Life.
Shady Acres will open at 7 p.m. nightly on Oct. 27-30 and will close at 10 p.m. each night except for Oct. 27, when it will remain open until midnight.
The maze is at 11400 Academy Road in Laurinburg behind Lighthouse International.
