State Senate candidate Gene McIntyre remains hospitalized, but “comfortable”after a one-car accident this week, his campaign confirmed on Thursday.
McIntyre, a Republican seeking the District 25 seat, had the accident Wednesday while driving from Stanly County to Rowan County for some door-to-door campaigning, the campaign said.
According to news reports, McIntyre flipped his truck.
The Laurinburg Exchange has not seen a copy of the accident report.
Following the crash, McIntyre was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center and then to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he was Thursday night.
In a statement through his campaign manager Elizabeth Edwards, McIntyre said that doctors have told him to “take a couple days off.”
“Then I will be ready to get back on the campaign trail,” McIntyre said, adding that he feels “much better today.”
McIntyre’s Democratic opponent, Gene McLaurin, said that he has been praying for McIntyre and that he looks forward to his return to the campaign trail.
“I’m just thankful that he is recovering and that it was not any worse,” McLaurin said.
McLaurin was in Stanly County on Thursday for a scheduled engagement with retired educators and said that while there he received a “good report that (McIntyre) is recovering.”
“There are a lot of things more important that politics and right now we should just be focused on praying for (McIntyre). It sounds like some of those prayers have already been answered by his recovery.”
McLaurin and McIntyre were last together at a forum at Scotia Village in Laurinburg last week.
There some confusion following the accident because of the similarity of the two candidates’ names. McLaurin said that he was contacted by members of the press who thought that it was he — and not McIntyre — involved in the wreck.
“We will have a state senator in January whose name is ‘Gene Mc’ and the last few letters will be determined by voters in this district,” McLaurin said.
The Senate District 25 seat is up for grabs after incumbent Sen. Bill Purcell of Laurinburg decided not to seek re-election.
Redistricting last year brought southeastern Rowan County into the district, which also includes Scotland, Richmond, Anson and Stanly counties.
