Pinecrest may be tops amongst cross country teams in the Southeastern Conference, but the Fighting Scots under first-year head coach Greg Wrape have much to be proud of at the end of the regular season.

After Oct. 16’s conference championship meet (which took place at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford) came to a close, the top 14 fastest times were selected to the All-Conference team. And three of those were Scotland’s own Logan Ward, John Holloway and Kendall Romaine.

Ward’s time of 17:32 was good enough for ninth place on the day, while Holloway (18:17) and Romaine (18:39) finished in 11th and 13th place, respectively.

The Fighting Scots also finished second place overall in the conference behind Pinecrest, who again dominated the field by finishing with the top seven fastest times in the meet.

But with nearly his entire team returning next season, Wrape believes that an off-season of dedicated work could potentially change the conference pecking order in the seasons to come.

“I feel like we have the talent to make things way more difficult on Pinecrest next year,” Wrape said. “With the competitive nature they’ve shown me all season, I think we can be far more competitive next year if we work hard in the spring and summertime.”

This Saturday at 10:30 a.m., the Fighting Scots participate in regional competition, which will also take part at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford. Wrape has selected seven combined runners to compete, including seven boys and two girls.

Running for the boys will be Ward, Holloway, Romaine, Kytel Collins-Jackson, Dylan Faulk, Jared Torgerson and Blake Ellis. Representing the girls are Sydney Faulk (sister of Dylan) and Shyanne Pate, the latter of which was Scotland’s top female runner for most of the season until an undisclosed ailment slowed her in recent weeks.
