U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell talked about the importance of hiring veterans during a visit to the area this week.
Kissell took a tour of the Meritor’s plant in Maxton on Monday. Meritor specializes in manufacturing components for military vehicles, and employs a large number of retired military and veterans from throughout the area. About 80 percent of the plant’s business is through the Department of Defense, including beam axles and independent suspensions for military vehicles.
Kissell did not contact this newspaper about the tour before Monday’s visit, but did send out a press release on Wednesday.
The release said that Kissell watched workers assemble military vehicle suspensions and that the congressman meet with a group of former military personnel and veterans now employed at the plant.
“The work done here in Laurinburg is crucial for the safety and efficiency of our military as they continue the tough task of keeping us free,” Kissell said in a statement. “Providing them with the most innovative equipment, made here in America, helps to greatly enhance our forces as they fight to protect our soil. I had a great time meeting with folks at Meritor and I especially enjoyed meeting those employees who have served our nation. Their experience, both in uniform and on the shop floor, reminds me that our military is in good hands with equipment made in America by people who have dedicated their lives to the strength and security of our great nation.”
Meritor Site Manager Chris Drose called the visit informative.
“We were interested to hear his thoughts on new programs going forward, as well as existing programs in regards to retrofits, Drose said. “We provided him with what we do military wise. We really appreciate the congressman taking the time to meet with us and tour our facility; our employees were very excited to see him.”
