SAPC baseball, softball teams pick up wins

Senior catcher/designated hitter Kyle Norris drove in four runs for St. Andrews in an 8-3 victory on Saturday afternoon as the Knights baseball team earned a Conference Carolinas doubleheader split against visiting Barton College.

Barton won the first game in a 23-2 blowout, and the Bulldogs took Game 3 of the series on Sunday by a score of 19-4.

The Knights are 5-17 on the season, 3-6 in the conference, and 5-6 at home. The Knights are 0-11 on the road. The Bulldogs currently hold 11-8 and 2-3 ledgers.

Norris finished with four hits and five RBIs on the day, including a double in both games. Norris ranks amongst the league leaders in doubles with nine on the season. Senior outfielder J.T. Maguire totaled three hits and has hit safely in 18-of-21 games this season.

Barton freshman Chris Rawlings, junior Wesley Francis and senior Will Johnson all had hits in both games.

Game 1: Barton 23,

St. Andrews 2

Barton scored in eight of nine innings to produce a season-high 23 runs in the opener. The Bulldogs ripped 23 hits while SAPC had 11 hits. Both teams had several chances to score more runs as BC left 12 runners on base and the Knights stranded 11.

Sophomore third baseman Aaron Watkins led the Bulldogs with a 5-of-6 performance with six RBIs. Watkins hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field in the seventh, and added pair of doubles, including a bases clearing, three-run double in the fourth.

Seniors Allen Corbett and Zach Boyette both went 4-for-6. Corbett and classmate Barrett Martin each drove in four runs, while Boyette produced three RBIs.

Senior starter Brandon Brinson went seven strong innings for his fifth victory of the season. Brinson (5-1) had five strikeouts. Junior Alex Ridout took the loss for SAPC, allowing 14 runs (12 earned) on 19 hits in six innings of work.

St. Andrews scored its runs on an RBI groundout by freshman Michael Hale in the fourth and a run-producing double by Norris in the fifth. Norris, senior J.T. Maguire, sophomore R.J. Blasi and junior Jeremy Fisher all collected two hits for the Knights.



Game 2: St. Andrews 8, Barton 3

Freshman starter Xavier Cruz picked up his first collegiate victory, and senior Travis Lee tossed three scoreless innings of relief for his first save of the season as St. Andrews bounced back from the opening loss with an 8-3 victory.

Cruz (1-1) allowed one earned run over four innings of work. Cruz allowed seven walks but only surrendered four hits. Lee allowed just one hit over the final three innings while posting two strikeouts.

The Knights jumped out of the gate with two runs in the first, but Barton cut the lead in half with a run in the second before SAPC pulled ahead 5-1 with three more runs in the third. Norris provided the Knights with three final insurance runs in the fourth inning by ripping a bases-loaded, three-run double off the base of the fence in left-center.

Williams smacked a two-run, stand-up triple (3) in the right field gap to highlight the Knights' scoring in the third. Williams and Norris were both 2-for-4. Maguire added one RBI and Weber touched home plate three times for SAPC.

Junior first baseman Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) five hits in the Lady Knights first three games at the 2009 Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion University at the Freedom Florence Softball Complex. SAPC lost to Lenoir-Rhyne 10-3 on Friday night before bouncing back with a pair of wins on Saturday including a 6-2 victory over Mansfield University and a 3-2 win against Tusculum College.

The Lady Knights will take an 8-11 overall record into the final day of the tournament when SAPC wraps up competition with two games on Sunday against Lander University at 11 a.m. and Salem International University at 1 p.m.

Shurtleff hit her first home run of the season on Friday and then collected two hits in both games on Saturday.

Junior Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) continues her hot play extending her current hit streak to nine games after hitting safely in all three contests. She produced four SAPC runs with four doubles. Marquez leads the Knights with 10 doubles, three home runs, and 21 RBI in 19 games.

Softball

FLORENCE — The St. Andrews softball team (10-11) went 4-1 at the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational this weekend. The Knights won 6-4 against Tusculum and 11-3 against Lander on Sunday (results from those games were not available to The Laurinburg Exchange at press time on Monday). Recaps of three earlier games are found below:

Friday: Lenoir-Rhyne 10, SAPC 3

Freshman Kaitlin Harris led off the game with a single and eventually scored to give the Knights an early advantage. Harris also had two stolen bases.

SAPC was held to five hits, but Danyell Marquez smacked an RBI double in the fourth and Brianna Shurtleff blasted a solo homer in the fifth to highlight the Knights offense.

Saturday morning: SAPC 6, Mansfield 2

Junior Morgan Farroll went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored to lead the Knights to a 6-2 victory over Mansfield University.

Freshman starter Ashley Disque had a strong performance for the Knights on the mound, scattering just four hits over seven innings. Disque (2-7) picked up her second win of the season with her four-strikeout complete-game. Disque helped out her own cause by scoring a run in the fifth and with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Junior Sarah Applegarth was 2-for-2 with two walks. Marquez belted a pair of doubles, including a two-run double in the fifth. Shurtleff added a pair of singles and one RBI.



Saturday afternoon: SAPC 3, Tusculum 2

Disque broke a 2-2 tie with a single in the sixth inning that scored sophomore Jasmine Dobbin for the go-ahead run, and Applegarth made it hold up from the mound.

The Knights were trailing 1-0 before scoring two runs in the second to take the lead. Marquez highlighted the scoring with a double that drove in Applegarth. The Pioneers were able to tie up the game in the fourth before St. Andrews answered in the sixth. Dobbin led off the crucial stanza with a double before Disque provided the eventual game-winning single.

Applegarth (6-4) held Tusculum to just four hits while fanning five Pioneers in her seventh complete game and sixth victory. Dobbin and Shurtleff each had two hits in Saturday’s second game.
