Dr. Harry L. Harvin, Jr.

Dr. Harry Lewis Harvin, Jr., 85, of Durham, died Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was a resident of Croasdaile Village in Durham.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, with the Rev. David Harvin and the Rev. Steve Hickle officiating. Visitation will be an hour before and after the service. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 9, at Sumter Cemetery in Sumter, S.C.

Surviving are three children, David Harvin and his wife, Sue, of Chapel Hill and Fayetteville; John Harvin and his wife, Judi, of Germany; Mary Harvin McDonald and her husband, Max, of Laurinburg; four grandchildren, Anna Reid Harvin and husband, Santiago Davila, Maggie Harvin, Emily McDonald, and Will McDonald; a sister, Sarah Reid Keels, and many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Harvin was born on Aug. 7, 1923, in Sumter, S.C., son of Harry L. Harvin and Sarah Reid Griffin Harvin. He grew up in Manning, S.C., and graduated from Wofford College in 1943. He served in World War II from 1943-1945 in the 141st infantry 36th division of the Army, mostly in Italy. After the war, he completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in History at Duke University. Dr. Harvin taught at Columbia College from 1951-1960, then at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg from 1960-1984.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, N.C. 28352.
