A Pembroke woman was killed today when she was mauled by several dogs at her home, according to a statement by Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.
The name of the woman, who lived at 17 Sharon Lane, is not being released until out-of-state relatives have been notified.
According to the statement, the dogs that attacked and killed the woman were “rescued” animals, meaning they were pulled from a county pound.
Sealey said a 911 call was received about 12:30 p.m. concerning the attack. When deputies arrived, they saw the woman still being attacked near a gate in the fenced-in backyard. The deputies were able to remove the dogs from the woman, but she was already dead, according the statement.
Sealey said deputies were told that there were several rescued dogs in the backyard of the home and that some larger dogs had attacked a smaller one. The woman tried to protect the smaller dog by using a rake, but she was attacked and knocked down by the larger dogs and mauled.
Animal Control officers were notified and the dogs were seized and impounded.
The Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Division is continuing to investigate.
