Candidate for the 8th Congressional District will have a another change to face each other.
There will be a candidates forum Wednesday for Democratic incumbent Larry Kissell and Republican challenger Richard Hudson.
The pair took part in a debate on Sep. 24 at Wingate University to share their views on senior issues
Organizers said this week’s event will be less of a debate and more of a candidate meet and greet.
It will be held at the Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton beginning at noon. The luncheon is co-sponsored by the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs of Robeson County.
Bo Biggs, the legislative chairman for the Lumberton chamber, said each candidate will have about 10 minutes to talk about their respective campaigns.
“It is going to be nonconfrontational and there will be no questions from the floor,” Biggs said. “I don’t know that either candidate is well know here so we wanted to do is give people an opportunity to get to know these guys.”
Redistricting has moved more of the 8th District into Robeson County.
Kissell
Kissell, first elected to office in 2008 after beating Republican U.S Rep. Robin Hayes. He won a second term in 2010. He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee where he serves on the Readiness and Land and Air subcommittees. He also serves on the House Agriculture Committee where he is a member of the subcommittees on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research; General Farms Commodities and Risk Management, and Specialty Crops, Rural Development and Foreign Agriculture.
Kissell grew up in Biscoe attending both Biscoe Elementary School and East Montgomery High School, where, after a 27 year career in the local textile industry, he taught for the 7 years prior to entering Congress.
A life member of Biscoe First Baptist Church, Larry is married to Tina Kissell.
Kissell said that he “believes that a strong moderate presence is needed” in Congress.
Hudson
Hudson, a 40-year-old from Concord was a chief of staff for former U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes, a Republican from Concord who is now chairman of the N.C. Republican Party.
He graduated from public school in Charlotte and from UNC-Charlotte, where he was student body president. Hudson served as district director for Hayes and led Hayes’ Concord and Rockingham offices for six years before becoming chief of staff for Congresswoman Virginia Foxx.
Hudson also served as chief of staff for two other conservative congressman before returning home to Concord and starting the Cabarrus Marketing Group.
Hudson previously served on the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Board of Trustees and has remained active in the community.
Hudson and his wife Renee,attend Crossroads Church in Concord.
Hudson said that the biggest problem facing North Carolina is high employment and a withering climate for job creation.
