The Scottish Pilot held its annual golf tournment this week to help charities in Scotland County.
The 20th Annual Barbara Sasseen Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Scotch Meadows Country Club on Tuesday.
The tournament is named for Sasseen, a charter member of the Scottish Pilot Club of Laurinburg. She was an avid golfer whose love for the game resulted in the establishment of tournament. Sasseen battled cancer until her death on August 31, 2000. Her many contributions to the community and Scottish Pilot Club will long be remembered, organizers said.
An awards luncheon was held at the Club House immediately following play on Tuesday with Chairperson Joyce Jewell, who welcomed golfers and thanked Scottish Pilot Club members and businesses for making the event possible.
Jewell also recognized special guests: Anna McMillan, sister of the late Barbara Sasseen, Rodney McCarter, her son, and Tony Sasseen, husband . A bouquet of flowers was presented to McMillan from the club.
Brenda Grubbs, the clubs chair of the Pilot International Foundation for the local club, also announced the winner of the Club’s “Sweetheart” Award.
Grubbs said that this is an award voted on by club members for that member in the Scottish Pilot Club whom they felt was always willing to do a little “extra”.
“This year’s winner is Sylvia Nelson who does many extra special things for the club”, said Grubbs as she presented Nelson with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Raffle winners were drawn for an “Old Duffer” statue donated by Jason Perhais of Unitque Stone and won by Mary Ann McLean. William Tatum won a Leaf Blower given by Southeast Farm Equipment by Charles Liles ; 50/50 Cash Drawing won by Gerald Oakes; and the Amish Quilt was won by Sybil Sikes.
Chip Wells presented the golf tournament awards as follows:
— First Place Team: Bill Sword, Anna McMillan, James McMillan and Rodney McCarter – team score 123.
— Second Place Team: Bill Blevins, Jeff McGirt, Mike Little, and Perry Oxendine – team score 125. Third Place Team: Jim Bumgardner, Jo Caldwell, Betty Rogers and Hal Jernigan – team score 126.
— Other winners were Ladies Longest Drive – Jane Callahan; Men’s Longest Drive – Jim Bumgardner; Ladies Closest to pin on #12 – Mary Tatum; Men’s Closest to Pin on #7 – James McMillan; and closest to pin on #17 – Gerald Oakes.
Jennie Meggs, Scottish Pilot Club president, invited all players to circle their calendars for next year’s tournament and thanked those who played in the Tournament. Next’s year tournament will be held the last Tuesday in September.
“All proceeds will be donated to worthy organizations in Scotland County,” Meggs said.
