She was born on Sept. 9, 1927 in Portsmouth, Va. to the late Arthur and Carrie Smith. She was raised in Norfolk, Va. and graduated from Maury High School Class of 1945. She was employed at Old Dominion University in the accounts payable department in the Office of Finance.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years O. “Jack” Karnes, Jr., her daughter Martha K. Lowery of Chesapeake, two grandchildren: Allison E. Lowery of Austin, Texas and Scott M. Lowery and wife Dr. Shana E. Harrington of Jacksonville, Fla., brother Arthur H. Smith, Jr. of Paris, France, one niece, one nephew, and numerous extended family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Flowers are welcomed or donations may be made to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s Association.
