The inmate who attempted to escape Feb. 2 had a previous escape, according to state records.

Records show Jeffrey Allen Manchester escaped June 15 from the Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Anson County.

Authorities in Anson believe Manchester escaped prison by clinging to the undercarriage of a truck.

The 37-year old hid in an abandoned Circuit City in Charlotte, stealing from a nearby Toys-R-Us until his capture in early January.

His more recent escape attempt has also caught state-wide attention.

Manchester apparently placed a dummy in his cell to trick correction officers while he made his escape.

Manchester made it outside the prison building, but was found before he could cross over the fenced-in enclosure.

Manchester is charged with escape from custody in Scotland County and has been transferred to Polk Correctional, according to a sheriff's report.

State records show that Manchester is in his ninth year of a 39-year term for a litany of charges, including several counts of first-degree kidnapping, armed robbery and breaking and entering, as well as possessing a weapon of mass-destruction, burning a public building and his previous escape attempt.

His projected release date is Jan. 12, 2040, but could be longer if he is convicted of his alleged second escape attempt.

The investigation of Manchester's escape attempt has led to the prison's superintendent, Frederick Hubbard, being reassigned until the investigation is concluded.

DOC officials say that the prison was not properly conducting head counts, which may be partially responsible for Manchester's escape.
