Hundreds are expected to “shag for the shelter” at today’s “Dog Days of Beach Music” event to benefit the Scotland County Humane Society.
Organized by Laurinburg native Rob Harvell along with Jerry’s Deli and Grill owner Jerry Riggins, the event will feature the popular tunes of “Jim Quick and Coastline” along with “Lloyd Hinson and Shaggin’.”
Dreamt up by Harvell and Riggins during a brainstorming session earlier this summer, the event is something they both hope to see repeated in the future.
“Jerry was saying in June that he wanted to do something for Humane Society so we will kind of use this as a test year. If this goes well, it is something we’d definitely like to do again,” Harvell said.
Riggins will be hosting the event in the field adjacent to his business, where a large stage was being set up Friday afternoon in anticipation of today’s beach music-loving crowd.
Beer, wine and food will all be available at the event, which Riggins said has already received a great response.
“We have had eight to ten sponsors help us out with everything and we are expecting people a crowd from all around,” Riggins said, having gotten RSVPs from as far as Charleston, SC and other surrounding states.
And while the evening will literally be fun and games, Riggins said that he hopes attendees will be conscious of the good cause that the event is supporting.
“There’s been some controversy about how the Humane Society is under-supported, and it seems like they get left out of fundraisers sometimes, so we want to help them continue their good work,” Riggins said.
The beach music concerts will follow the second annual Habitat for Humanity cornhole tournament, which has attracted 64 teams in only its second year of existence.
“Lloyd Hinson and Shaggin’” will be making their debut today, as they open for “Jim Quick and Coastline.”
Tickets are $50 for couples and $30 per person, and a raffle drawing for local deals will be held along with a 50/50 drawing. Beer will be served at a cost of $2 and glasses of wine will be served for $3. Catered VIP tents are also available at a cost of $750 per rental. The VIP package includes table seating, appetizers and a server.
DJ King Curtiss of 102.5 FM will serve as entertainment from 6-7 p.m. with Lloyd Hinson and Shaggin’ set to perform from 7-9 p.m. Jim Quick and the Coastline Band will take the stage at 9 and will continue until 11 p.m.
