An accident on Atkinson Street Wednesday claimed the life of a 78-year old Laurinburg woman.

Leanne Williams Allen, of East Covington Street in Laurinburg, ran off the left side of Atkinson Street heading north, according to police.

Her blue Chevrolet Lumina went across the front yard of Generation Health Services before running through a fence and into a tree, police said.

Police were called about the accident at 2:42 p.m. When officers arrived, Allen did not show signs of life, officials said.

She was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Officials believe that Allen had a heart attack that caused her to lose control of her vehicle. They also do not believe she was conscious when the car struck the tree.

Allen was on her way home from Covington Street Elementary School, where she worked as a school crossing guard.
