The state NAACP and its partners will gather people from across North Carolina in Raleigh's Chavis Park,Saturday to hold an outdoor people's assembly at the 3rd Annual HKonJ Movement and March.

A delegation from Laurinburg and Pembroke is expected to attend.

"100 years ago during this week, the NAACP was organized. Now, decades later, their legacy of love for all humankind motivates us and our partners to walk together on Valentine's Day to show North Carolina how to love," NC NAACP President Dr. William Barber said.

"We are gathering to continue to remind our state legislators and other elected officials that our 14 point agenda and more than 80 action items are still relevant. The people of this state who turned out in record numbers to vote last November want to see real change. And further, we are coming to further say, in the midst of this current financial crisis, 'Do not balance this budget on the backs of the poor.'"

Organizers will gather at Chavis Park around 9:30 a.m. The program will begin on Jones Street between 11:30 and noon. Attendees are encouraged to park at City Decks 16, 34 and 68. Bus riders will be dropped off on Chavis Way.

Updates on labor, voting rights, education and immigration will be given by HKonJ partners.

"The HKonJ movement has been growing since 2005. We began as a coalition of a dozen or so social justice activists from black, white and Latino organizations. Today, our coalition includes 85 groups representing labor, healthcare, education, environmental, economic development, housing and human services from all across the state," Al McSurely, NC NAACP Legal Redress Chair said. "Our progress to impact public policy related to poor people and people of color has been dynamic and the results are beginning to show."
