Mrs. Vara Elise Bridger Pyle Hilburn, 80, of Laurinburg, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 at Morrison Manor, Hospice of Scotland County, in Laurinburg.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the East Laurinburg Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Richard Tyson.
She is survived by two children, son Arnold Glenn Pyle and wife Darlene Pyle of Goldsboro, and daughter Teresa Lynn Spry and husband Ronnie Spry of Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Ophelia Adams Peck of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Roger Bridger and Darryl Bridger of Laurinburg; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hilburn, and two sisters, Marian Carter and Evelyn Caudill.
Born Sept. 1, 1928 in Laurinburg, she was a daughter of the late Solomon and Mamie Bridger. After marriage, she moved away to Moundsville, W. Va. and Memphis, Tenn., where her two children were born. After returning to Laurinburg, Vara worked for Waverly Mills and retired after 46 years of employment. She was an active member in her beloved East Laurinburg Baptist Church. She was always there when needed and never thought twice when it came to helping a Church family member. She lived to serve GOD and her Church
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

James W. (Demps) McKoy, 58, of 517 Warren St., Laurinburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 15 at the Jackson Funeral Home chapel in Laurinburg. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. The burial and dove ceremony will follow at Hillside Memorial Park in Laurinburg.
