Laurinburg City Manager Craig Honeycutt may be moving to Burlington - He was offered the county manager position at Alamance County.

The county commissioners unanimously voted to offer Honeycutt the position on Friday, according to Dan Ingle, vice chairman of the Alamance County commissioners.

"We all felt like he was the strongest candidate," Ingle said. "Now don't get me wrong - we had some very good candidates. It was a tough decision."

"Just overall, I think he is a good man," Ingle said "If accepts I will be excited about it."

"He really did a great job on his interview," said Linda Massey, chairman of the Alamance County commissioners. "I think he would do a good job for us."

"He is really a very knowledgeable person," she added. "I think he has got the ability and the expertise to do it."

"I have been offered the job in Alamance County," Honeycutt confirmed. "At this point, we have not finalized any of the details with respect to the employment agreement"

"I am very humbled that a community that size would consider me because those type jobs in the state are few and far between," Honeycutt said.

He added that he has not resigned from his position as city manager as of yet and is still fully employed by the city of Laurinburg.

The board reinterviewed the two final candidates for the position, Honeycutt and Tim Burgess, the interim county manager, on Friday morning.

Sherry Hook, the human resources manager for Alamance County, said the commission had set the pay range from $99,000 to $115,000.

She said that Honeycutt had not yet accepted the position and that they still need to negotiate the compensation package.

Hook said that no specific start date has been chosen at this time.

According to Bob Bell, director of human resources Laurinburg, Honeycutt's current salary is $98,606, a car allowance of $450 a month and the regular benefits of a city employee.

Honeycutt has been the city manager of Laurinburg since Aug. 29, 2005. He also served as Fletcher city manager for 12 years.

A native of Aberdeen, Honeycutt graduated from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke before getting his master's from Western Carolina University.

The budget for the city of Laurinburg is $32.1 million with a general fund of $7.3 million. The city has 150 employees to serve a population of under 15,000.

The budget for Alamance County is $147.68 million with a general fund of nearly $130 million. The county has 80 employees tos ervice a population of over 145,000.

Mayor Matthew Block said Honeycutt will be missed,

"If he decides to take the position, we wish him all the best," Block said. "He has done a good job for Laurinburg and the citizens of Laurinburg. It is not going to be easy to replace him."

"It certainly doesn't come at a good time for the city with everything that is going on with the economy," Block said. "But with that said I wish Craig only the best. I think the people of Alamance county will be pleased with his work."

Block added that, if anyone knows a good city manager, give him a call.

"He is trying better himself and you can't fault a person for that," Laurinburg Mayor Pro-Tem Rembert DeBerry said. "I think he has been a good city manager. He has a lot of knowledge about city government. He will really be missed."

Hmmm. Tuff choice here for Honeycutt. Should he go to Alamance County in a more desirable area or stay in Scotland County and be associated with high unemployment, high taxes, and a huge vaccum sucking all of the industry out? Honeycutt, forget the money; tare the rear view mirror off of your car and never look back!
