Ready for a steaming bowl of homemade soup to fight the winter chill? If so, you will have a choice of two locations to satisfy your palate when a pair of soup sales take place today and tomorrow in Laurel Hill and Laurinburg.
Laurel Hill United Methodist Church on Cameron Street in Laurel Hill will hold a soup and sandwich sale today from 5 to 7 p.m.
Soup, sandwiches, drinks and dessert will be served at $6 per plate. Eat in or take out is available.
County Commissioner Bob Davis, a member of the church, assists with ticket sales and soup making for the event.
"We will have a variety of sandwiches for sale, including homemade pimento cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and ham with either mayonnaise or mustard," Davis said. "And our vegetable soup is absolutely delicious."
Homemade pies, cakes, brownies and cupcakes will be available, as well as drinks.
Proceeds from the sale will be used for the needs of the church, according to Davis.
"We have a food pantry and have just begun a clothes closet," Davis said.
"Money from the soup sale goes into the general fund toward our local benevolences."
On Friday, The Young at Heart Senior Club will hold its annual bazaar and soup luncheon at the Scotland Place Senior Center on Turnpike Road in Laurinburg from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Doris Douglas, chairperson of soup sales, encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the soup, to socialize, and to support a worthy cause.
"We will be serving delicious, homemade vegetable soup," Douglas said. "Come and enjoy generous portions of soup with free refills."
The cost of the meal will be $4 for soup, dessert and a beverage. Quart jars of soup will be available for $4.50.
Proceeds from the sale will go toward homebound members of the community.
"With seniors growing older, and more being unable to travel from home, we decided to give a big portion of our proceeds toward visitation of homebounds," Douglas said.
