Mr. Smilie Alexander Gregg, IV, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009. Born in Laurinburg, he was the son of the late Smilie Alexander Gregg III and Martha Washington Everett Gregg. Mr. Gregg graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1942, earning a BS in Commerce, and later, two Master's Degrees, one in history and one in education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He served his country as a Naval Officer during WW II for four years on board a destroyer escort, the USS Jacob Jones. His career focused on timber management and real estate. Mr. Gregg was a former longtime resident of Bladen County, Chapel Hill, and Georgetown County, S.C. He was a lifetime and much loved member of the North State Gun Club of Bladen County. He was a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, S.C. and a member of the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina. At his death, he was a resident of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services for Smilie Alexander Gregg, IV, 88, will be held Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Still Hopes Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., following the service, in the parlor of Guignard Mansion. Burial will take place Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery at Lake Waccamaw.
Surviving are his wife, Penn Anthony Gregg; daughters and sons-in-law Jane C. Derby and Dan of Pond Path, N. H., Mary Maxwell Goldston and David of Lake Waccamaw, and Sabra Gregg Campbell of Delray Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Frederick Alexander Rogers, Smilie Gregg Rogers, Kinchen Council Rogers and his wife, Anna, Dan Russell Derby, Tobin McMahan Baumann and her husband, Andrew, Christopher Cole McMahan, William Brent Campbell and his wife, Danielle, and Jason Alexander Campbell; six great-grandchildren; and a stepson and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Lawton, III and their children, Coles, Louisa and James Lawton. He was predeceased by a sister, Martha Gregg Burton and his first wife, Jane Council Gregg.

Flecia G. “Sue” Prosser
Flecia G. “Sue” Prosser, 70, of Southport, formerly of Richmond, Va., Laurinburg, and Richmond, Ind., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, after a three year battle with cancer. Born in Bippus, Ind., she is survived by her husband of 48 years, William A. “Pete” Prosser; daughters Felicia of Newport News, Va., and Nancy of Alexandria, Va., and her husband Arthur F. “Tres” Lorton; brother Melvin Speicher and his wife, Jane, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two sisters, Ann Johnston and Jane Stevens, both of the Philadelphia area; her cousin, Joene Henning and her husband Jerry of Muncie, Ind.; as well as several nieces and one nephew.
After moving to Southport in 2004, Sue became active in the Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she served as coordinator of the Service to Veterans project. She was also a charter member of the Commissioner Charles Gause Chapter of the Society Daughters of 1812. Sue was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va., where she lived from 1998 to 2004, during which time she made numerous tote bags and afghans for cancer patients at Medical College of Virginia, an activity she continued after moving to Southport. She also was an active member of the Scotchtown Chapter of the DAR. Sue served as Activities Coordinator at Scotia Village Retirement Community in Laurinburg from 1988-1998 and was an active member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church and the Dames of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. During her many years in Richmond, Ind., Sue was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, participated in the Ticknor Club, and volunteered with the local Cotillion organization and at Reid Memorial Hospital. A memorial service and celebration of Sue’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Oak Island Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in North Manchester, Ind. during Memorial Day weekend.
