When John Imbaratto approached St. Mary's Catholic Church with his homemade chili recipe and a unique idea, the church reacted by organizing a supper to help charity.

Last year’s first ever edition of the event "did very well," according to organizer Jeanne Kreuser, who said that Imbaratto's recipe is a secret and "excellent" one.

The tradition continues today with the Knights of Columbus, Laurinburg Council's Super Bowl Chili Supper beginning at 11:30 a.m.

"We are blessed at St. Mary's with great cooks ... that's why all of our events are popular with the community," she said.

The Knights of Columbus are looking to add the Super Bowl Chili Sale to that list of successful annual food sales at the church, which includes a yearly fish fry.

Money raised through sales during the chili supper will benefit the Knights of Columbus' various charitable beneficiaries, including scholarship funds and the Autism Society.

"It is a good money making event for us," Kreuser said.

Chili is not the only great food being served, either, she added. Homemade cornbread made by John Imbaratto's wife, Sue, which is said to rival the chili, will also be served during the supper.

The Super Bowl Chili Supper is being held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on 800 S. Main St.

Supper will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5-7 p.m. For $4, you can buy homemade chili, cornbread and iced tea.

Carryout quarts, which can be saved for Super Bowl Sunday, are available for $5 each.
