The Lady Scots improve to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the M-SEC with their third win over Pinecrest (6-12, 2-7) this season. Scotland won the other M-SEC meeting between the teams by a score of 62-42 on Dec. 16, and the Scots also beat the Patriots in the championship game of their own Christmas tournament, 53-34, on Dec. 23.
Pinecrest stayed close early in Tuesday's game. The end of the first quarter came with SHS leading 15-12, and the Scots led 17-14 when Patriot point guard Karmen Spencer went down with an ankle injury.
Spencer was important to Pinecrest because of her ball-handling and play-making capabilities. With her out of the game, Scotland did as it pleased, outscoring the Patriots 18-2 the remainder of the second quarter to take a 35-16 halftime lead.
"We kind of had a feel for them, what they like to do offensively and defensively," said SHS head coach David Johnson of his team's third meeting with Pinecrest. "We wanted to come out and set the pace.
"They competed early, but once we got a little rhythm going we took the game over."
Scotland's offense has been led by senior guard Megan Brigman most of this season. Brigman had another big night against Pinecrest on Tuesday, scoring 26 points to go with 10 steals and five assists.
Brigman hit four 3-pointers in the first half (two in each quarter) and had 10 points on four field goals and a pair of free throws in the third period before sitting the final 10 minutes of the game. Her 16 first-half points matched Pinecrest's team total.
Brigman's backcourt mate, Shayla McEachern, scored 10 points and led the Scots with seven assists.
"She's been the leader," said Johnson of Brigman. "She's playing well and leading us, her and Shay.
"They know this is their last go-around, and they really want to make a statement in their senior year."
The Scots outscored the Patriots 22-3 in the third quarter, and the starters were removed at the 1:32 mark with the team holding a 55-18 lead. Scotland's reserves played the rest of the way, and the Patriots outscored SHS 9-0 in the final period.
Alexis McNeil had five points for Scotland. Alicia Pipkin had four points and Jasmin Amos scored three points and grabbed eight rebounds. Brittany Dockery and Miriya Bryant also had three points each.
Candace Seagraves led Pinecrest with nine points. Addy George had six for PC.
Scotland plays at Douglas Byrd on Friday at 6 p.m.
