Speed is believed to have caused a fatal early-morning wreck on Sunday, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Clarence Kevin Priest, 29, of Ocean Isle Beach, was killed when his 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt ran off Old Lumberton Road and overturned several times, according to Trooper D.R. Ford.

The accident occurred at 2:05 a.m. about three miles southeast of Laurinburg, Ford said. No other vehicle was involved.

The black Cobalt was traveling east at about 100 mph when it ran off the right side of the road during a downhill turn, Ford said. The posted speed limit was 55 mph.

Priest got his car back on the road but he overcorrected and ran off the road again, striking a concrete divider and a ditch before overturning, Ford said.

Priest was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, Ford said.

The car's passenger, Christopher Chad Lowery of Laurinburg, 23, was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital and later transported to a medical center in Chapel Hill, Ford said. He added that Lowery was wearing a seat belt.
