Electric bill: City may hike rate

The Laurinburg City Council is expected tonight to consider increasing the electrical rates by four percent, just seven months after the city increased its rates by 13 percent.

Laurinburg is one of 32 municipalities who, as members of NC Eastern Municipal Power Agency, are preparing for the agency's 4 percent rate increase next month.

A memo from Fowler & Associates, the city's Charlotte-based electrical consultant, advised the city to go ahead with the rate increase so that "the city and the electrical department remain financially sound in all aspects."

The memo also notes that "additional increases may be expected" from the power agency.
