According to Harold Smith, Laurinburg's fire chief, a back-hoe accidentally severed the line while working on the street. He said the company was Ansco.
Smith said that emergency personnel were notified at 11:37 a.m. about the incident and went immediately to secure the scene and direct traffic. The scene was cleared by 12:45 p.m.
Smith also said that a city employee was the person who called the incident in. He was unsure why the work crew did not call it in or how long it was before they were notified of the gas leak.
He also said that the work crews contacted Piedmont Natural Gas before the city ever found out about it.
Calls to Piedmont Natural Gas were not returned by presstime
