Do the names Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, and Peanut Butter Patties evoke pleasant memories?

If so, you’ll be happy to know that it’s time again to place your order for Girl Scout cookies.

The Girl Scouts will be taking orders for cookies beginning Jan. 10 through March 15. Along with the old favorites, a new addition for 2009, Daisy Go Rounds, will be offered.

The price per box will be $3.50, with all of the proceeds generated from the cookie sale program to stay within the girls’ local areas. Customers who purchase five or more boxes of Girl Scout cookies can enter their name in a drawing to win a year's supply of free Girl Scout cookies. Six winners will be selected.

Paige Smith, the membership director for the Girl Scouts in Scotland and Hoke Counties, said there are four easy ways to purchase boxes of cookies.

“To acquire your supply of cookies, you may give me a call at 910-384-6641, visit our website at www.nccoastalpines.org, purchase them from Girl Scouts selling door to door, or buy from booths located throughout the area.”

According to Smith, scouts will be stationed at booths in front of selected businesses from mid-February through mid-March. Locations include Food Lion, Wal-Mart, Goody’s, Taco Bell, Mac’s Breakfast Anytime, Harris Teeter, H & R Block and at other businesses to be announced.

“Girls will also be visible in their home neighborhoods selling cookies,” Smith said. “We hope to have a presence throughout Scotland County for our cookie sales.”

For the fifth consecutive year the Girl Scouts will participate in Operation Cookie Drop. Customers may make tax deductible donations throughout the cookie sales period, from Jan. 10 through March 15. Those donations will be used to purchase cookies to ship overseas to military personnel at Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, New River Air Station, Seymour Johnson AFB and the National Guard of Pitt County. Since the program first began, more than 100,000 boxes have been shipped to the troops.

“Our annual Girl Scout Cookie Program activity helps us make the Girl Scout experience available to more than 31,000 girls in 41 counties,” Rusine Mitchell Sinclair, CEO of the North Carolina Coastal Pines region of the Girl Scouts, said.

“Last year’s revenues were used to give financial aid, scholarships, and camperships. The funds also help maintain our six area camps and support local Girl Scout troops. We’re also able to recruit and train volunteers and provide ongoing Girl Scout programs.”

Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is a leadership development organization for girls with 3.6 million girl and adult members worldwide.

Scotland County Girl Scouts serves more than 350 girls locally. For more information, contact Paige Smith at 384-6641 or email ppardue@nccoastalpines.org.
