Do you have boxes of old paperwork in your home that needs to be discarded? What about your home desk, is it cluttered with outdated papers?

If you answered yes to these questions, Scotland County Cooperative Extension has just the solution. Many of us have mounds of old receipts, forms and documents that need to be disposed of.

However, in most cases the paperwork contains personal information too risky to just throw out and too bulky to keep.

The FBI estimates that between 500,000 and 700,000 people fall victim annually to identity theft. The consequences of identity theft can be astonishing. Victims can spend countless hours closing accounts, opening new ones and correcting credit records.

“I am certain there are many people such as myself that have accumulated a lot of paperwork over the years”, shared Sharon English, Family & Consumer Agent, with Scotland County Cooperative Extension. “With identity theft one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, we wanted to offer our citizens an opportunity to dispose of their information safely”.

On Saturday, March 21 from 10 am until 2 pm Scotland County Cooperative Extension and members of Extension and Community Association will sponsor a Community Shred Day.

The event will be held at the Scotland High School parking lot at 1000 West Church Street in Laurinburg. This service is offered free for individuals only.

The limit is four bags/boxes or 100 pounds per person. Scotland County citizens and those living in surrounding counties are encouraged to participate. Shred-It, a company that specializes in secure document management will have a truck on hand.

“We will receive material to shred until 2 pm or the truck is full, whichever comes first,” English said. “We hope that everyone will mark this date on their calendar and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to safely clear their homes of old paperwork, especially as it is offered at no cost”.

For information on the Shred-It event please contact Sharon English at Scotland County Cooperative Extension at (910) 277-2422.
