The Second Annual Phillip Hayes Girls Softball Fast Pitch Memorial Tournament returns to Laurinburg this weekend, boasting over 20 teams in the tournament this year.
The annual event, held at Optimist Park, will begin Saturday, Sept. 24, at 8 a.m.
Optimist Park gates will open at 6:30 a.m. for 28 regional teams.
The tournament will feature teams from both North and South Carolina, with four different divisions, including a 10-and-under division, a 12-and-under division, a 14-and-under division and a division for high school teams.
The tournament will host six 10-U teams, six 12-U teams, eight 14-U teams and six high school programs.
Championship game times will be held around 4:30 on Sept. 25.
The tournament will feature local programs such as the Scotland Heat, Carolina Pride and Carolina Hot Stix.
Last season, the Laurinburg Softball All-Stars and the Carolina Pride claimed titles in the 8-and-Under and 10-and-Under leagues.
The tournament expands this season after hosting 14 teams in 2010.
The tournament is held to honor former Optimist Club Baseball Commissioner Phillip Hayes, who served as the organization’s president from 1995-96 and was named Optimist of the Year on three separate occasions in 1992, 1993 and 2003.
