The Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of its annual Spring Litter Sweep.
The Southern Scientific Paranormal team, headed by local resident Michelle Grooms took the title of first place and “King of the Mountain” by collecting 1,096 pounds of trash.
In second place was the Brumley/Messer team with 438 pounds of trash.
The Southern Scientific Paranormals took home $300 for first place and will use their money to fund their trip to go on an investigation at the Moon River Brewing Company in Savannah, GA on May 14. On this trip they will be conducting a live feed of paranormal activity that night from their website at www.ssparanormal.ezweb123.com .
“We participated in the Litter Sweep because we are proud of our communities here in Scotland County and want to be involved in making it a better place to live. Despite the hard work, the team had a lot of fun. The team and those involved with helping us were astonished by the amount of trash on our roadways. It was overwhelming to see how much trash we collected and to look back and see how much more still needed to be done,” said Michelle Grooms, case manager for Southern Scientific Paranormals.
A total of six teams participated in this year’s Spring Litter Sweep and collected a total of 2,213 pounds of trash around Scotland County.
“That amount of trash collected in one day lets you know exactly how much litter is lying around in our area. I’m glad the Chamber and other community members are making an effort to at least put a dent in this long time concern of Scotland County - we have to start somewhere,” said Theresa Lamson, Chamber President.
