St. Andrews grapplers Justin Hoover and Richard Manwarren highlighted the Knights’ wrestling program on April 28 at the annual St. Andrews Athletic Banquet, with Hoover receiving one of the college’s top athletic honors.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native was named the recipient of the Carl F. Ullrich Award, which is given annually to the student-athlete that best exemplifies commitment, courage, discipline and leadership.
Hoover, the Knights’ heavyweight representative, won 19 matches for the Knights this season, despite holding a weight of 215 pounds, almost 70 pounds lighter than the weight class maximum.
The Knights’ junior finished second on the team in wins this season while racking up an impressive 10 consecutive victories during the year. Hoover picked up six wins by pin this season, with his quickest pin coming at 55 seconds.
Ullrich was the first non-athlete ever inducted in the Army Athletic Hall of Fame and served as the Knights’ Athletic Director from 1995-97 and 2002-04. Ullrich was inducted into the St. Andrews Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 after helping the college move into the Division II ranks.
Hoover also took home the Team Academic Award, as well as the Knight Warrior Award.
The Knights’ Richard Manwarren took home most of the team’s individual wrestling awards after leading St. Andrews with 27 victories this season.
The Jacksonville, Fla., native was named the Knights’ Outstanding Wrestler, while also picking up laurels for the Most Wins, Most Pins and Most Takedowns.
Manwarren finished with eight pins for the Knights, with his quickest coming in just 52 seconds.
The Knights’ sophomore finished the 2010-2011 season with 65 takedowns, almost twice as many as any other wrestler on the team.
Greg Pattis was named the team’s Most Improved Wrestler.
Pattis, an active member of the Marine Reserves, wrestled at the 184-pound weight class for St. Andrews this season, earning seven wins while registering two pins.
The Knights’ Eric Brown (125) and Troy Baranik (157) were honored for making the NCAA Division II All-Academic Wrestling squad.
