The majority of East Laurinburg residents are concerned about the proposed tax. When the city officials first presented the idea, some of the reasons they used were avoidance of annexation, the need to pay for storm damage, and financial help if and when Waverly Mills closed.
When the mayor placed the notice for the special meeting in the Dec. 13 issue of The Laurinburg Exchange in the community calendar and not the public meetings section, it did not mention the reason for the meeting or its importance. That information was also left off of the hand-delivered notices.
City officials are trying to govern by intimidation and deception. The alleged criminal activity by the mayor pro-tem is appalling.
This shows that the "Good Old Boy" system is alive and well in East Laurinburg.
The mayor and the mayor pro-tem should resign and new elections should take place.
A new vote on the taxes should take place where all the citizens are notified.
