LAURINBURG — Seven candidates filed for elective office on Thursday, including three incumbents.

Incumbent Hyner Massey Jr. and Paschal Stewart filed for reelection to the Wagram Tow Board.

After serving the town of Wagram for more 16 years, Massey said he hopes to hold his seat as town commissioner for another term.

“I ask for your support and vote in the November 2017 election as we continue to make Wagram a better place to work and live,” Massey said.

Massey is a graduate of Shaw High School in Wagram and studied for two years at North Carolina State University’s satellite campus in Wheeling, W.V. He is a member and chairman of the deacons at Unionville Baptist Church in Laurinburg.

“I have served 16 years on the board for the town of Wagram and want to continue to serve you. I have helped complete many projects and plan to promote further growth for the town of Waram in my term.”

During Massey’s time on the town board, a new town hall, recreation center, play ground, sewage system, and community center built. There have also been multiple businesses open with Wagram’s town limits, according to Massey.

Massey was married to the late Mildred McPhatter Massey for 52 years and has two sons, Gregory and Joel Massey.

Paschal Stewart did not provide any information to The Laurinburg Exchange.

East Laurinburg

Gail Chavis, a resident of East Laurinburg for five years, has filed for one of the three open town commissioner seats.

“East Laurinburg is my hometown and I will work hard to try to make my community a better place to live,” Chavis said, who is married to Gary Chavis and has two children, Terry and Joel Godwin.

Chavis is a graduate of Scotland High School and works in Scotland County. She is a member of the East Laurinburg Baptist Church and hopes to lower crime in the municipality and take care of the abandoned houses throughout the area.

Also filing in East Laurinburg is Tyresa Haywood, current town commissioner, who did not supply The Laurinburg Exchange with any information.

Two additional filings for Laurinburg’s City Council took place Thursday, including Brian Gainey and George Medlock, who both are running for the District 2 seat against incumbent Drew Williamson. Frank Evans is also seeking the District 2 seat.

Neither Gainey or Medlock submitted information to The Laurinburg Exchange.

Also filing Thursday was Belton Chavis, for a Gibson commissioner seat.

Municipal election filing ends today at noon.
