LAURINBURG — The newly opened K&S Fresh Donuts has people coming back for fresh donuts, a sweet treat that has been missing in Scotland County.

“We want to build into the community and bring something to the community for them to taste different stuff,” Sokhom Thomas Keo, one of the three K&S Fresh Donuts owners, which includes Sopheak So and Sophak Sarn Keo.

K&S Fresh Donuts offers an assortment of sweets, including apple fritters, bear claws, cinnamon rolls, doughnut holes, filled donuts, doughnut twists, as well as their most popular glazed and chocolate dipped doughnuts. The shop also sells breakfast sandwiches, bottles soft drinks, tea, and coffee.

“I normally get the Krispy Kream frosted, but these are fresh — they’re good. I like it,” said Nelson Ortiz, who was trying K&S Donuts for the first time while visiting from New York.

Starting at 3 a.m. everyday, Sokhom and Sophak Keo, and So arrive to start prepping for the first batch of donuts. So is the “doughnut master” and mixes the dough, lets the yeast rise, cuts out each individual pastry, and lets them rise a bit longer, before Sokhom Keo fries the dough and smothers the fresh product with icing and/or the desired topping.

In its first week of business the shop sold over 1,200 doughnuts a day, something the new sweet spot did not see coming, however, since the initial rush of new customers, production has calmed down to around 20 to 30 dozen doughnuts a day.

Multiple customers have described the fresh doughnuts from K&S as better than Krispy Kream and other national chains. Being the best isn’t something the owners strive for, they simply want to provide their customers with a quality product and let word of mouth promote the business.

“We don’t say we are the best, we let the customer decide that,” Keo said. “We try to offer variety, but then again we like to keep it simple and let people judge on that.”

According to Thomas Keo, the business partners hope to open more locations in Scotland County in the future if there current location works out.

“The donuts keep me coming back, they are way better than Krispy Kream. These are made fresh and you can get them while they are still hot,” said Modelle McRae said, who says the glazed doughnut is his favorite.

The doughnut shop is located at 10101 McColl Road, and is open Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. to noon and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon.
