St. Andrews wrestler named NAIA Scholar Athlete

SAU Athletics St. Andrews senior wrestler Tyran Taylor-Owens was named one of 70 college wrestlers picked as a 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.


TOPEKA, KAN. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) recently announced 70 student-athletes that participated in wrestling were named 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

St. Andrews senior and 141-pound grappler Tyran Taylor-Owens was the lone Knight to make the list as he currently has over a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Taylor-Owens was also named to the Mid-South Conference All-Academic team this year. The Knights senior ended his season at the Mid-South Conference qualifying tournament with a 2-1 in his final match. Taylor-Ownes finished the 2017-18 season with an 8-15 overall record and 10 takedowns.

The Knight senior will be spending his spring semester as an intern in the St. Andrews’ Sports Information office.
