LAURINBURG — St. Andrews University held their annual athletic banquet earlier this week and handed out numerous awards to the college’s deserving athletes.

Three seniors — Terrence Jackson, Tyran Taylor-Owens and Laura Deihl — were voted by the university’s head coaches to receive three special awards the Robert Renfrow “Peanut” Doak Award, Carl F. Ullrich Award and the the Howard Reichner Award.

Senior outfielder Terrence Jackson won the Robert Renfrow “Peanut” Doak Award for being the university’s Outstanding Senior Athlete. Doak was a highly successful coach and athletic director at Presbyterian Junior College from 1947-51 and a three-sport athlete at N.C. State. The award was created by former athletes who admired Doak for the impact he made on the lives of those he coached.

Jackson, the left fielder on the baseball team, currently leads the Knights with seven home runs and 45 RBIs. He is hitting .349 and leads the team with a .577 slugging percentage.

Senior wrestler Tyran Taylor-Owens won the Carl F. Ullrich Award, which requires the recipient to demonstrate leadership, courage, integrity, and sportsmanship. The award is given in honor of Ullrich, who was the Athletic Director at St. Andrews from 1995-97 before serving as the university’s athletic director from 2002-04.

Taylor-Owens, the Knights 141 pound wrestler, was one of the team’s captains winning 10 matches and maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Senior dual-sport athlete Laura Deihl received the Howard Reichner Award, which embodies the characteristics of a St. Android and demonstrates commitment in the classroom, and carries at least a 2.5 GPA. The award is given in honor of Professor Howard Reichner, who spent 29 years in the United States Army and came to St. Andrews in 1992 as a politics instruct and is still teaching.

Deihl was a dual-sport athlete playing women’s soccer as a quality defender and was one of the top goal scorers on the women’s lacrosse team in her first year of playing and scored 10 goals.
