Soccer players named to All-Conference team
Five Scotland soccer players were named to the Southeastern Conference All-Conference team this week. Goalkeeper Morgan Haywood was selected along with field players Greta Griswold, Destinee Grove, Ariel Ratcliff and Jessie Kee. The All-Conference team honors 22 of the best players in the SEC. Tennis tourney a success despite rain
It took a few more days than expected, but the Scotland County tennis center hosted another successful Chris McLean Memorial Tournament. The 13th annual tournament played in honor of Chris McLean, a former Scotland High School tennis player who was tragically killed in a car accident, was originally scheduled for May 18 and 19. Scotland High School is looking for its first new boy’s soccer coach in nearly a decade. Colin McDavid is out as Scotland High School’s boy’s soccer coach after almost 10 years of leadership, but will continue to coach the girl’s team. Scotland athletics director Tommy Britt said that both he and McDavid decided it was in their mutual interest to go different ways when it came to the boy’s program before the new season begins in the fall. ...

Local singer to perform at ACC tourney
Before UNC and NC State take the field on Saturday for their ACC tournament showdown, local singer Kim Denison will perform the national anthem for the crowd at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.   Denison said she auditioned to sing the anthem for a Durham Bulls game about three months ago. Three Scots named to All-Conference team
A trio of Scotland High School varsity men’s tennis players was named to the 2013 Southeastern All-Conference team. The league announced last week that Scotland High School freshman Jacob Blackman, sophomore Robert Beacham and junior Walker Davis earned the honor given out by league coaches. Scots playoff run comes to an end
Scotland’s run through the state playoffs is over. The Scots softball team fell to West Johnston 5-0 on Tuesday in the fourth round of the playoffs. The Wildcats move on to the eastern region series this weekend. West Johnston’s Megan Mills limited Scotland’s chances and moved the game along at a brisk pace with her fastball. Scotland has a state champion from the track. Malik Diggs won the state championship in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday with a time of 14.4 seconds. Offense powers Scots over East Wake
The bats came alive for the Scots on Friday as they drove in six runs in a 6-3 win over East Wake in the third round of the softball state playoffs. Five different hitters recorded a hit for Scotland, including Courtney Williams who hit two monster homers and Abby Bray who went 3-3. NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball appears set for a vast expansion of video review by umpires in 2014 and is examining whether all calls other than balls or strikes should be subject to instant replay. Replay has been in place for home run calls since August 2008. Scotland County represented on winning Marlboro Academy team
Marlboro Academy won their second consecutive SCISA AA State Championship Tuesday, and the winning team featured several Scotland County residents. The Lady Dragons swept Carolina Academy in the best-of-three series, winning game one 8-0 and game two 5-0.
