January jobless jumps
Like every other county in the state, Scotland saw its jobless rate jump in January. According to a report by the state Department of Commerce, Scotland County’s unemployment rate rose by just over a percentage point from December. The local unemployment rate was 17.8 percent in Janaury, up from 16.6 percent the previous month. The report said that of the Scotland’s 13,143 workforce, about 2,334 people were looking for work in January. ...

School fence buy questioned
Several Scotland County commissioners wondered aloud at this week’s board meeting why the school system decided to spend a $109,000 windfall on perimeter fences for schools rather than offer the money back to the county. More than 100 competitors from throughout the region competed in the subjects of algebra I, algebra II, and geometry.
