With more than 12,000 pounds of food donated to charity during its 2012 drive, the “National Letter Food Drive” is looking to again “stamp out hunger” in Scotland County during its annual collection day on May 11.

Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers in conjunction with the United States Postal Service and the United Way of Scotland County, the drive will see all of the food it collects donated to Church Community Services of Scotland County.

“As always, this is the time of year when food supplies are at the lowest levels. With summer vacations coming up, many children will be missing that hot lunch that schools normally provide,” said Isiah Wright, local coordinator of the food drive and member of Branch 1128 of the NALC.

And because of letter carriers are involved, giving could not be easier or more convenient.

“We ask that on Saturday, May 11, you please place any food donations by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will gladly pick it up for delivery to the food bank.”

Those with post office boxes will find donation receptacles inside of their local post office, Wright said.

“Economic conditions will dictate that many of our fellow citizens will be making hard choices between paying for rent, utilities, medicines and needed food. Food drives such as this do indeed help alleviate those burdens,” said Wright.

The National Letter Food Drive has become a tradition among postal workers, and a source of donations upon which Church Community Services depends, according to organizers.

“Let us all help take care of our own. Help stamp out hunger,” Wright said.
