The Scotland Health Care System took time to acknowledge employee excellence on Friday, recognizing those health care workers that system CEO and president Greg Wood called “the best of the best.”
Respiratory therapy worker Melissa Mace was honored, among the more than 100 nominated, as the year’s top employee, receiving the system’s “Award of Excellence” along with a $1,000 check from Wood in recognition of her work.
“These are the people who exemplify the excellence that we believe in,” said Wood to a packed Scotland Memorial Hospital cafeteria assembly yesterday.
Of the more than 1,000 employees eligible for the 2012 “Award of Excellence,” 10-percent were nominated for the award, and four were selected as finalists.
In addition to Mace, Brad Stutts (finance systems), Marcus Locklear (imaging) and Rachelle Harrington were recognized as finalists, each receiving $100.
Almost as exciting to Mace as the cash prize was the reserved parking space she won along with the award.
“I can get out of the rain now,” said Mace, adding that she “can’t wait to go spot hunting” in the parking lot.
Before presenting Mace with the award, which Mace said she was “completely surprised to receive,” Wood read a letter from a patient’s relative attesting to the fine work Mace has been engaged in.
“God put an angel by the bedside,” said Wood, quoting from the letter submitting describing Mace’s “remarkable professionalism.”
Pleased at the thought of having made someone happy, Mace, who first joined Scotland Health Care in 1999, called working at the hospital “an honor and a privilege, even after 10 years.”
According to Wood, employees working in patient care received the largest number of nominations for the award, a fact which Wood called “a good thing, considering that’s kind of what we do around here.”
