Unofficial results from Tuesday’s Primary Election indicate that Democrat Gene McLaurin and Republican Gene McIntyre will face off later this year for the District 25 seat in the North Carolina Senate.
Results of more than 20,000 votes from Scotland, Rowan, and Richmond counties with partial results from Stanly and Anson counties give 74.3 percent of the Democratic vote to McLaurin, currently serving as mayor of Rockingham. In Scotland County, McLaurin brought in 3,429 votes over opponent Daniel Wilson’s 1,159.
McIntyre, a retired educator, commanded 73 percent of more than 20,000 Republican votes. Of Scotland County’s voters, 848 cast their ballot for McIntyre over 166 votes for his opponent Jack Benoy.
Barring a change in the current results, McIntyre and McLaurin will contest for the seat, being vacated by Bill Purcell of Laurinburg, during the November general election.
