The Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce will team up with Communities in Schools for its 18th Annual Drive for Education Golf Tournament.
“We’re looking forward to a great golf tournament this year where we have the opportunity to build awareness of Communities In Schools and what we’re doing here in Scotland County,” said Katie Clark, executive director of Communities in Schools of Scotland County.
The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. on May 22 at Scotch Meadows Country Club.
The tournament has in previous years been organized as a fundraiser to support educational programs administered through the Chamber of Commerce, such as Junior Leadership Scotland, scholarships, and leadership development programs.
“This past year, we’ve decided to turn most of those programs over to the school system or to Communities in Schools because they fit better under their purviews,” said Chamber of Commerce President Becca Hughes. “We’ve decided to let the proceeds from the Chamber’s golf tournament go to CIS. So far the partnership is working well and we’re pleased with it.”
The tournament will be a Captain’s Choice played over 18 holes, though players are welcome to enter individually. Prizes will be awarded for hole-in-one, closest-to-the-pin, and longest drive competitions. The cost for individuals is $75, or $300 for a team of four. The organizers hope to have up to 100 players, or 25 teams.
Lunch and dinner will be served, and a football autographed by the Fighting Scots state championship football team will be raffled at dinner. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5.
Proceeds from the event will be directed toward Communities in Schools of Scotland County, a nonprofit dropout prevention program.
“We are partnering with the Chamber this year and we are very grateful for them allowing us to partner with them,” Clark said. “All proceeds will go towards the Communities In Schools organization to help us support Scotland County students to stay in school and achieve in life.”
Communities in Schools currently serves some 75 students at North Laurinburg Elementary School and Carver Middle School.
“CIS is an excellent program and has an excellent reputation nationally,” Hughes said. “The way it’s been started in Scotland County, they’re doing things well by reaching kids starting at younger grades. They have a lot of the same goals that the Chamber has, helping students to be successful — successful students make successful businesspeople and a successful workforce. It is sort of a logical transition, because what they’re doing is very much what we’ve done pieces of over the last 25 years.”
