As patients in Scotland Health Care System’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program become healthier the staff celebrates the milestones reached.
However, when a patient marks the major milestone of 1,000 visits the event is celebrated by patients and staff alike. Recently, Daisy Lee Lipscomb was honored with an event to mark her 1,000th visit. Celebrating this milestone were all her friends in the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program she has come to know and appreciate over the 10 years she has participated in the program.
“Daisy is a dedicated member of our Cardiopulmonary Rehab group and only the fifth person in our program’s history to reach this major milestone,” said Angelita Locklear, RN, program coordinator. “It’s not an easy step to reach and we all are extremely proud of her dedication and commitment to remain active and in the program.”
“When I first came to Rehab about ten years ago I couldn’t even wring out a dishrag,” said Lipscomb. “After undergoing cardiac bypass surgery in 2002 I was afraid to attempt many of the activities I used to do.
Lipscombb said she can now do just about anything she attempts.
“I come three times a week and use the Nu-Step and the treadmill, and walk on the track,” she said. “I try to exercise 45 to 50 minutes at each session. I stick with the program because I want to continue with my very active lifestyle. Without Cardiac Rehab I would not exercise and I just can’t imagine not keeping up my exercises.”
Lipscomb also credits the dedication of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation staff for her longevity in the program.
“I’ve been in the Maintenance program for a long time now,” she said. “If I didn’t have this program I know I wouldn’t be in the good shape that I am. Everyone has been a wonderful help to me.”
Greg Stanley, director of Cardiopulmonary Services, said have the patients formed freindships and “feel like family.”
“We have a special group of patients who continue to remain committed to the program,” Stanley said. “We make it easy for our members to work out with each other and we follow up with them if for some reason they miss a session. We believe that we have a great staff to help motivate our patients to strive for a healthier lifestyle.”
Staff members include in addition to program coordinator Angelita Locklear, exercise physiologist Joe Gonzalez, Cardiopulmonary Rehab nurse Katie Dold and Cassie McNeill, secretary.
