Laurinburg native Meredith Bounds will “hit the ground running” when she begins her new job as public information officer for Scotland County Schools next week.
The job was vacated two weeks ago by Andy Cagle, who served in the position for several years. Cagle is now the director of marketing and communications at Richmond Community College.
Bounds was most recently employed by the American Cancer Society, working for two years as a community manager in Hoke, Robeson, and Bladen Counties. Prior to that, she spend a decade working in community relations with St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and has also worked with Scots for Youth.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Bounds worked in Raleigh for several years before relocating to Laurinburg.
“It was a very conscious choice to come back here and then to remain here,” said Bounds. “I have a vested interest in Scotland County.”
She will begin work with the schools on Monday, and says she is looking forward to the opportunity to learn more about the school system as a whole.
“I’m really excited about getting into the schools on a very regular basis and seeing what fun, exciting, innovative programs are out there,” Bounds said. “It was a really good opportunity; a lot of what I’ve done in my past insofar as the positions that I’ve held translate well to the position in the school system.”
As public information officer, Bounds’ duties will include serving as primary liaison between the schools and local and regional news media, functioning as the schools’ spokesperson at various functions, and overseeing the development of school publications such as handbooks and calendars. As such, Bounds will be optimally placed to bring attention to student achievement.
“This is an opportunity to see students succeed and let folks know what wonderful things the staff of the schools are doing,” said Bounds. “I want what I do, whatever I do, to matter.”
Bounds’ husband, Brian, is employed with WestPoint Home in Wagram, and they have two school-aged children.
