Local gospel music fans will want to mark their calendars for what organizers of the 8th annual Kiwanis Gospel Jubilee are calling “some of the best variety gospel music in this area.”
Directed by Kiwanian Cecil Daughtry, the Sept. 15 event is scheduled to feature nearly a dozen regional gospel acts.
“People love it,” Daughtry said. “We have about 450 attendees on average, and they tell us that they look forward to it every year.”
According to Daughtry, the secret to a successful program is variety.
“That’s the key, to have two hours of different kinds of gospel music,” Daughtry said.
This year’s program is expected to even include gospel miming and interpretive dance.
Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club as well as the Scotland High School Key Club, the funds raised at the event go to support the groups various service projects as well as the Key Club itself.
Rachel Gallman, Operations Manager/Program Director of WLNC Radio Station, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, while Richard Tyson, of the Spirit Borne Quartet, will pull double duty as the event’s sound supervisor.
“Richard has been a vital part of Gospel Jubilee and Kiwanis for many years,” said Daughtry.
Expected to be included in this year’s Jubilee lineup are the Spirit Borne Quartet, Eastern Sonrise, Mackie Swails the mime, the First Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir led by Sylvia Stewart, Alyse Player, Betty Odom and Kim Dennison, Adoration, Stuart Carmichael and The Oxendines, a popular group from Shannon.
“Again this year several … favorite performers will be returning as well as some new faces. The line-up promises to be exciting and appeal every attendee,” Daughtry said.
The Eighth Annual Kiwanis Gospel Jubilee will take place on September 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Scotland High School. Admission will be $7 for adults, with free admission for those under the age of 10. Tickets will go on sale August 1 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis member, at the door or by calling Daughtry at 910-280-9632..
“Everything we do is for the children of this area and the world. They are our future,” said Daughtry, thanking the community for its support of the event. “Our motto is ‘Serving the Children of the World’.”
