A weekend beach music concert benefiting the Scotland County Humane Society was a smashing success according to shelter representatives.
“The Dog Days of Beach Music” presented by Jerry’s Deli and Grill drew hundreds of beach music and animal lovers to a large field in Laurinburg adjacent to Jerry’s.
Featuring the popular “Jim Quick and Coastline” along with local group “Lloyd Hinson and Shaggin’” the benefit continued until well after its scheduled 11 p.m. conclusion.
“I usually go to bed at 9 o clock, but it was such a wonderful time that we all stayed until midnight,” said Kathy Murphy, former president of the Scotland County Humane Society board.
Murphy hopes that the benefit will serve to raise local awareness of the humane society in the community.
“I’m glad people are realizing what a gem we have in the Scotland County Humane Society,” Murphy said.
Following the success of this year’s event, “Dog Days” organizer Rob Harvell said that plans are already underway for what he hopes will become an annual Laurinburg event.
“Tons of people came up to us and said what a great event it was and that they enjoyed the band and the music in that field,” Harvell said. “Only the pine trees of Laurinburg could make for such a fine setting.”
Logistically speaking, Harvell said that a number of things were learned that can be improved upon next year.
Having been planned by Harvell and Jerry’s Deli and Grill owner Jerry Riggins in June, there was little time to advertise and prepare for the large concert.
“Next year we will have more time to really explain (the event). We will get people together and sell sponsorships so that next year we may have cheaper tickets and draw more people,” Harvell said.
Tickets to this year’s event were sold at $30 per individual and $50 per couple.
According to Harvell, the busy Jim Quick (who Harvell counts as a personal friend) has already committed his services to a “Dog Days” follow up in 2013.
“He was on board from the very start this year, he cut us a great deal and he looks forward to doing it again next year,” Harvell said.
The services of “Lloyd Hinson and Shaggin’” were also indispensable to this year’s event.
“They put a lot of work into setting up the stage and playing a show, and I definitely want to thank them,” Harvell said.
Saturday’s benefit marked the coming out party for Hinson’s local group, which was well received by those in attendance.
